Retro Manchester United Kits through the Years
In the Premier League, Manchester United are without peer in terms of classic football shirts. Chances are, you’ll see an image of any one Man Utd retro football kit – home or away – and a whole host of memories will come flooding back. Of course, this is due in large part to their dominance for the majority of the Premier League era. In the post-Ferguson era, Old Trafford has seen little success – but even with this dry spell taken into account, they have still come out on top in 13 of the Premier League’s 28 seasons.
With this level of achievement, it’s no surprise that Man Utd vintage kits convey such a sense of iconography. There has been countless classic home, away, and third shirts sported by Manchester United players over the years.
"And Solskjaer has won it!" Certain historical football kits are inevitably and inextricably associated with certain matches, players and moments. The 1998-99 vintage Man Utd home shirt – when Manchester United's kit was manufactured by Umbro and sponsored by Sharp – is perhaps the most iconic in Manchester United's illustrious history. The late turnaround in the Champions League Final secured the first treble in English football history and turned an already gorgeous classic football kit into an instant classic. The idiosyncratic zip collar and Umbro logo detailing on the sleeves make for a deliciously 90s design.
Almost as dramatic was the 07-08 Champions League triumph, the second in the Alex Ferguson era. The Nike-designed Man Utd retro home kit that season was, coincidentally, perhaps their finest this side of 2000. A laconic design void of any superfluous flourishes bar a vertical stripe which beautifully framed the names and numbers of the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo on the back, this vintage football kit was an instant hit with United supporters.
In terms of away kits, United have had a bevvy of stunning numbers. In recent years, since Adidas resumed sponsorship of the club after well over a decade with Nike, the designers have opted for evocative, nostalgic colour schemes with eye-grabbing holographic finishes. But Manchester United’s historical kits were often at their best when at their most stripped-back – the black Nike 03-05 away kit which instantly brings back memories of the famous fracas between Roy Keane and Patrick Viera in the tunnel at Highbury, for example.
