Retro Real Madrid Kits through the Years
Football is, as they say, a game of opinions. It’s difficult to say anything with absolute certainty. But the most prestigious, most opulent club in world football? Of that, there can be no doubt. Love them or loathe them, Real Madrid are a peerless powerhouse, a trophy-winning machine with more Champions League titles to their name than you’ve had hot dinners.
Such a titanic club needs suitable workwear. And season after season, Real Madrid deliver the goods, releasing classic football kits that reflect their regal status withing the game. Throughout their illustrious history, their crisp, clean white vintage football shirts – often with a royal blue or gold trim – have enhanced their image, creating a sense of gravitas that no other club in world football can claim to possess.
In recent years, Adidas has produced a bevvy of retro football shirts to accompany Real Madrid’s sensational Champions League streak. But to find the best of the best Real Madrid historical football kits, you need to look a little further back in time.
One of the smartest looks in living memory was the centenary kit they sported for the 01-02 season. One of their more minimalist old kit designs, Adidas helped Real Madrid celebrate the occasion with a simply gorgeous classic kit. Plain white with a polo collar and classic three-stripe sleeve design, the crucial detail for this Real Madrid vintage kit was the absence of a sponsor. The military dog tag-style name and number font on the back was a bonus. It looked even better with the Champions League emblem on the arm – they won the competition against Bayer Leverkusen that year thanks to that Zinedine Zidane left-footed wonder volley.
That European triumph was the zenith of the first Galacticos era. The second began in 2009 when Florentino Pérez sanctioned the transfers of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.
Their classic home shirt for the 09-10 campaign was one of their finest too. It used a particularly memorable Adidas template with a peaked collar and the manufacturer's log placed centrally rather than to the side. The three-stripe retro kit sleeve design was once again present but this time was intersected by subtle gold detailing. A marvellous vintage shirt to usher in a new era for Real Madrid.
